The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is One of the most eagerly awaited and competitive competitions features India and Australia, two of the best Test teams in the world. So much so that for some Australian athletes, not even the Ashes are as significant. There have been 102 matches played between these two superpowers since their first matchup in 1947, with Australia winning the most with 43 victories and India taking the lead with 30 triumphs.

However, recent history has been on India's favour, as the team led by Virat Kohli became the first Asian team to defeat Australia at home in the 2018–19 series. The 2020–21 season, which is mainly recognised for India's comeback after dropping the first game, saw them retain the crown.

Due to stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane's now-famous innings of 112 runs at the iconic MCG when Virat Kohli had to travel back home, the second Test of that series has cemented itself in current lore. That performance contributed significantly to India's eventual 8-wicket triumph. The third test ended in a tie, then India defeated Australia at the fortress Gabba in the fourth test, winning both the match and the series.
